So it’s official, then: there really is a link between sex, drugs and rock’n'roll.
Boffins at Erasmus MC University Medical Center in the Netherlands say their research as drawn clear links between listening to loud music, smoking marijuana and having “risky” sex.
The study, published in the Official Journal of the American Academy Of Pediatrics, revealed that young people who listened to loud music were more likely to have smoked a joint in the last month and those who frequently attended clubs and gigs were twice as likely to use condoms “inconsistently” during sex. They were also six times more likely to binge drink.
The researchers, who surveyed 944 students from inner-city vocational schools aged 15 to 25 surveyed, concluded:
The results provide evidence in support of the integration of risky music-listening behaviors within research on and programs aimed at reducing more traditional health-risk behaviors such as substance abuse and unsafe sexual intercourse.
Commenting on the study, Sharon Levy, head of the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, told Reuters: “We know that high-risk behaviors certainly run together, so in some ways it’s not a big surprise.”
